Custom schemas

Does any application exist that implements the OpenDocument format  and supports "custom schemas"? Please note that I distinguish between the OpenDocument format and applications that implement it, and although OpenDocument does support custom schemas, I do not know if any applications (such as Open Office) exist that implements this feature.

It is quite easy to apply custom schemas in, for example, MS Word 2007 (which does not implement OpenDocument) and edit and modify a document visually within that word processor in such a way that the document will always conform to the custom schema. I would just like to make sure whether this is possible in any application (such as Open Office) that implements the OpenDocument format

The fact that Open Office implements the OpenDocument format has nothing to do with the custom schemas. It works just as Ms Word only you don't have to pay for it. It even has some features and optimizations to make it more user friendly than Word.

Penelope, I think the original question is about a counterpart of Custom Schema, a feature introduced with OOXML and Office 2007 Word.

I don't believe (1) that there is any easily corresponded feature of the ODF format that allows and that  (2) the OO.o installations I have do not apear to "work just as Ms Word " in this respect.

There might be some other provision of OO.o, but I am not aware of it.  Since ODF is the native format of OO.o I believe thta is a relevant factor.

I'd be happy to be mistaken.  Can you point to a description or indicate what OO.o menu items achieve what the questioner is interested in?

Hi,

am posting your question to OOo...

 Cheers,

Charles.

Many thanks,

Louw,

no direct answers for the moment but that thread seen on the XML project of OpenOffice.org might help.

Best

Charles.

Yes, that thread is relevant and does help.

Thanks for you support!

Hi,

I am not sure I understand what you want to do with custom schemas here. You mention an application using those schemas and then editing a document under ODF. May I ask you what for? Why would you use a custom schema in the application but not in the document?

(OT but related: perhaps all you need is XForms. In that case OpenOffice.org has full XForms support).

Cheers!

I would like the ability to integrate data with OpenDocument documents while
maintaining a separation of presentation (OpenDocument markup)
and data (custom schemas and instances thereof). I was mentioning MS Word 2007
(which implements Open XML) and where this ability (separating presentation -
Open XML markup - and data - custom schemas) is possible. I would just like to know
whether this is possible using OpenDocument with an application such as OpenOffice.

Louw, there is no custom schema support in the way that is supported in Microsoft Office 2007.  I assume that it won't work with the Office 2007 SP2 implementation of ODF for that reason.  Although there is room in the ODF package for carrying special XML parts, there is no provision in the ODF specification for using custom XML parts as sources and sinks for fields in the document except for what XForms can do.

Do you have a simple Word 2007 .docx that could be used as a test case (i.e., how can this be done with ODF?).  That would make the question more specific (and understandable in an ODF context).
