Another Vendor to Fully Support ODF: GemBox Software

The new release of widely used GemBox.Spreadsheet .NET component fully supports Open Document Format for spreadsheets (.ods files). GemBox.Spreadsheet already supports XLS, CSV, XLSX and HTML, so addition of ODF will enable C# and VB.NET developers to read, write and convert between all that formats. To understand the importance, we need to look at existing user base. GemBox.Spreadsheet is used by more than 1200 companies worldwide (Deutsche Bank, Intel, IBM, HP, Verizon, Schlumberger, Bayer, Siemens, ABB, Shell, Infineon, XEROX, Allianz, AT&T, Volvo, Swarovski and others).

KOffice 2.0.0 released

The KOffice team is extremely pleased to finally announce version 2.0.0
of KOffice.  This release marks the end of more than 3 years of work to
port KOffice to Qt 4 and the KDE 4 libraries and, in some cases,
totally rewrite the engine of the KOffice applications.

UNESCO, Sun to promote open source tech

In an effort to support social and economic development, UNESCO and Sun Microsystems signed a Collaboration Agreement on Monday at the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) Forum 09. The agreement recognizes open source technologies as key to increase access to information, communications technologies and ICT skills training in under-served communities throughout the world. The agreement is part of UNESCO's ongoing effort to improve digital inclusion globally by partnering with the private sector.

Oracle Office, MySQL, and other dreams

Paul Murphy writes: Most people don’t know this, but at one time Oracle Corporation ran an extensive internal beta adding a pretty good word processor and spreadsheet to the Oracle Office communications product most recently renamed Oracle Beehive and now positioned against both Exchange and Domino.

At the time I didn’t see the combination as competitive with Applixware or even Q-Office, but recommended it for sale because it did one thing better than any competitive product I knew of: it stored everything as rows in the standard database.
